The Saxberget complex zinc-lead-copper-silver sulphide deposit is located within the Bergslagen ore district of central Sweden, about 150 km NW of Stockholm.

It is hosted by a Palaeoproterozoic sequence of volcanics and sediments on the Baltic Shield, and is located on the western margin of the Bergslagen province.   The geology of the ore deposit is dominated by an isolated east-west striking belt of volcanics cut by several generations of granitoids emplaced during the 1800 Ma Svecokarelian orogenic cycle.

The ore is hosted by a 1 to 20 m thick metasedimentary unit characterised by Ca-Mg-Fe-rich skarn minerals, grading locally into dolomitic limestone.   Above and below are thicker (150-200 m) quartzite units containing quartz and mica with subordinate gedrite, almandine, cordierite and sillimanite.   All of these altered rocks are enclosed in a suite of dominantly acid volcanics.

The ordebody has a slab like geometry, with a strike length of 400 m, down plunge dimensions of more than 1500 m and thickness of 1 to 20 m.   Although the orebody is complex it can be divided into a brecciated zinc and lead rich style, mostly in altered Ca-Mg-Fe-rich sediments (skarn), and a subordinate copper rich zone in the quartzites, with a gradual transition between the two types.

The original orebody totalled around 10 Mt. The Zn:Pb ratio is highest in the massive ores and least in the copper rich quartzites.
