The Bafq District, which contains major iron ore, magmatic phosphate, Th-U and Pb-Zn mineralisation, is located to the east and north of the town of Bafq, which is located 115 km south-east of the city of Yazd, in central Iran.

The Bafq district occupies a narrow rift zone extending from south of the town Bafq to Sagand and Robat-Posht-Badam ~150 km to the north. The total resource of mostly high grade 65% Fe iron ores is ~1500 Mt, distributed over 34 zones of aeromagnetic anomalies. Iron ore is being mined to supply local steel works. In addition, economic apatite deposits have attracted attention, with the first phosphate plant being established at the Esfordy deposit, which has an estimated resource of 17 Mt of apatite with 2 to 3% REE (Phosphate Mines Development Co., 1999). In the Bafq district, apatite is associated with both magnetite (-hematite) mineralisation and with apatite-bearing silicate-phosphate-magnetite-carbonate rocks or 'apatitites'. The iron ore deposits have been classified as Kiruna-type (Williams and Hushmandzadeh, 1966; Borumandi, 1973; Daliran, 1990, 1991; Daliran et. al., 1994; Förster and Jafarzadeh, 1994; Mücke and Younessi, 1994).

The deposits of the Bafq are the subject of a paper in the monograph: "Hydrothermal Iron Oxide Copper-Gold & Related Deposits: A Global Perspective" volume 2, published by PGC Publishing, Adelaide, Australia.
