The La Verde porphyry copper deposit is developed in the Sierra Madre del Sur in Michoacán, southern Mexico (#Location: 19° 4' 40"N, 102° 1' 53"W).

Mineralisation is associated with a dacite porphyry stock and accompanying intrusive breccia cutting an earlier, but probably related larger, phaneritic textured pluton of quartz-diorite (Sillitoe, 1976). Rocks in the surrounding district include quartz diorite porphyry, quartz monzonite porphyry, quartz feldspar porphyry, aplite, breccia and pegmatite.

The bulk of the mineralisation is present as breccia filling, with lesser quantities in a stockwork. The mineralisation has been dated at 33.4±0.7 Ma. The alteration is principally propylitic at La Verde, with an assemblage of epidote, chlorite, calcite, albite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, while pyrite is minor to absent. Significant quantities of K-feldspar accompany the propylitic assemblage, with associated rich bornite. The bulk of the ore grade chalcopyrite is associated with the propylitic alteration (Sillitoe, 1976).

A cupriferous oxidised capping is developed over the deposit with an oxide assemblage of goethite, malachite and pitch-limonite, with lesser azurite, chrysocolla and erythrite. No enriched supergene blanket is recorded (Sillitoe, 1976).

Published resource estimates include:

  110 Mt @ 0.7% Cu, 0.088 g/t Au (Resource, 1975, Sillitoe, 1976).

The most recent source geological information used to prepare this decription was dated: 2008.
